Sequel to the classic F-Zero game

F-Zero 99 is a free racing title for the Nintendo Switch and is the spiritual successor to the classic F-Zero game that debuted back in 1990. Set in the distant future, players will take part in thrilling, fast-paced races with the goal of finishing first while avoiding various deadly traps and pitfalls along the way.

Much like Fast RMX or Redout: Lightspeed Edition, F-Zero 99 takes heavy inspiration from the original for its retro pixel graphics and gameplay mechanics. It combines elements of racing and vehicular combat to offer a frenetic and chaotic experience that players will enjoy.

Return of the futuristic racer

It has been more than two decades since F-Zero was released, but here now comes its spiritual successor called F-Zero 99, remaining faithful to its looks and core gameplay. You will race against 98 other racers, and given that number, chaos is bound to ensue. You get to compete in two primary tournaments, namely Grand Prix and Mini Grand Prix, with their corresponding qualifying rounds.

Speed is the name of the game in F-Zero 99 and you'll get various chances to outpace your opponents with collectible power-ups and boosts. To add to the challenge, things can get physical quite quickly as cars ram into each other. Defend yourself with Spin Attacks to avoid getting knocked off the track and losing too much speed from getting a direct hit.

You can also collect Super Sparks that create a special shortcut called a Skyway to let you jump over multiple opponents. Other features include Team Battle and Pro Tracks modes as nice breaks from standard tournaments. Do note that this game is currently exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members. Hence, you will need to subscribe if you want to play it.

A long time coming

It took a while to get here, but a new entry to the popular F-Zero series has finally come, and it's as good as you remember it. Here is the same charming retro art style and thrilling gameplay that fans love, made more accessible to Switch owners. Do note that it will require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, though. Highly recommended.
